Marta Kostyuk beat four-time champion Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 on Sunday to reach her first French Open quarterfinal in Paris.
The 15th-seeded Ukrainian had never taken a set from Swiatek in three previous meetings. She broke late in the first set and then won the last five games of the match.
Swiatek, who turned 25 on Sunday, made costly errors under pressure. She hit two double faults in the 12th game before Kostyuk sealed the opening set with a backhand passing shot.
Kostyuk extended her clay-court winning streak to 16 matches. She entered Roland Garros after winning titles in Madrid and Rouen.
Kostyuk will next face compatriot Elina Svitolina. The seventh seed rallied past Belinda Bencic 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The all-Ukrainian quarterfinal ensures that Ukraine will have a women’s semifinalist at Roland Garros for the first time in the professional era.

Svitolina called the result an “amazing achievement” for Ukrainian tennis amid the country’s war with Russia.
Sorana Cirstea also reached the quarterfinals. The Romanian beat Wang Xiyu 6-3, 7-6 (4), 17 years after her first Roland Garros quarterfinal run.
