Marcelo, the former Real Madrid left-back, announced his retirement from professional football on Thursday.
Marcelo dedicated 16 years to the Spanish club, winning six La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies. “At 18, Real Madrid came knocking on my door, and arriving here was a turning point,” Marcelo shared in a heartfelt social media video. “I can now proudly say I am a true ‘Madrileno’. What a journey it has been with this unique club.”
During his time at Madrid, Marcelo formed a formidable partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo, with whom he won four Champions Leagues, including the 2014 final against Atletico Madrid, which ended Real’s 12-year wait for their 10th European Cup. Ronaldo praised his former teammate on Instagram, saying, “My brother, what an incredible career! We’ve experienced years of achievements, victories, and unforgettable moments together.”
Beyond European competitions, Marcelo also claimed two Copa del Rey titles and four Club World Cups, making 546 appearances and scoring 38 goals for Los Blancos. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez lauded him as “one of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, and a true legend of the club.”
Marcelo’s influence extended beyond the pitch. Although he did not play in the 2022 Champions League final, his leadership was felt as his compatriot Vinicius Junior scored the match-winning goal against Liverpool. Vinicius expressed his gratitude on social media, noting, “Thank you for your advice, reprimands, and for the time spent by your side. We were victorious on the field and are friends off it.”
Marcelo also had a notable international career with Brazil, earning 58 caps and participating in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. He won the 2013 Confederations Cup and earned two Olympic medals, a silver in 2012 and a bronze in 2008. Reflecting on his international duties, Marcelo said, “Playing for my country from the youth levels up has been a great honour.”
After his time at Real Madrid, Marcelo had a short stint with Greek club Olympiakos before returning to his roots at Fluminense, a Brazilian club. He played a key role in their first Copa Libertadores win in 2023, defeating Boca Juniors. Marcelo and Fluminense mutually agreed to part ways last November, and he has not been active in professional football since.
