The Mangla Dam is almost at its full capacity, with its current water level standing at 1241.50 feet, just shy of its 1242 feet limit. Consequently, authorities plan to release excess water through its spillway. This decision is a response to persistent heavy rains filling rivers and reservoirs.
Adding to the potential flood risk, India has discharged substantial water volumes from the Pong and Bhakhra Dams into the River Sutlej. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) warns of possible medium to high floods downstream of Ganda Singh Wala within the next day.
The PDMA has alerted nearby districts, emphasizing the preparedness needed to protect people and property. With India set to release more water into the River Sutlej, flow rates at Ganda Singh Wala could surpass 100,000 cusecs in two days.
Local administrations in Bahawalnagar, Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, and Vehari have received guidance to brace for potential flood-related emergencies.
