LeBron James will leave the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency before returning for a record 24th NBA season, ending his eight-year spell with the franchise.
James replied on X to a farewell post from Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss, saying it was an honour to wear the team’s purple and gold.
Buss said James was one of the greatest athletes in history and thanked him for eight years with the Lakers. She cited the 2020 NBA title and the records he broke with the franchise.
James joined the Lakers in 2018 and led them to the 2020 championship during the Covid “bubble” postseason.
His agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN that James informed the Lakers of his decision as a courtesy before the start of free agency.
Teams and players could begin talks at 6 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, but players cannot officially sign until July 6. James became a free agent after the Lakers’ second-round playoff exit.
James has been linked with a possible return to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat. It also said the Golden State Warriors have been mentioned as a possible destination with Stephen Curry.
