The kerosene price hike in Pakistan has reached new heights, with the government raising the rate by Rs70.73 per litre effective immediately. According to an official notification, kerosene now costs Rs428.74 per litre, up from its previous price of Rs358.01.

The sharp increase comes as a separate notification confirmed that petrol and diesel prices will remain unchanged. The Petroleum Division stated that petrol will stay at Rs321.17 per litre, while diesel will hold at Rs335.86 per litre.

The division explained that the decision to maintain petrol and diesel prices was made despite increases in the global market. The government will cover the price differential for oil companies to prevent further burden on consumers.

Under the arrangement, the government will pay Rs176.41 per litre for high-speed diesel and Rs77.98 per litre for petrol as price differential claims to oil marketing companies.

Kerosene Users Face Rising Costs

The kerosene price hike carries significant implications for households that rely on the fuel for cooking and heating, particularly in off-grid areas where it remains a primary energy source.

While petrol and diesel rates have been temporarily stabilised through government subsidies, kerosene users will bear the full impact of the latest adjustment. The government has not indicated whether any relief mechanism is planned for kerosene consumers.

The divergence in pricing decisions holding petrol and diesel steady while allowing kerosene to rise reflects the government’s targeted approach to subsidy allocation amid fiscal constraints and rising global energy costs.
