On Sunday, police clashed with protesters outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC), enforcing Section 144, which prohibits gathering four or more people during a demonstration against the killing of blasphemy suspect Dr. Shahnawaz Kunbhar and perceived extremism in Sindh.
Authorities used baton charges to disperse the protesters, as captured in TV and social media footage. South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza reported that police detained 20 individuals, including rights activist and PTI leader Ali Palh and Soorath Thebo, among others.
KPC president Saeed Sarbazi stated that police blocked all routes to the press club using containers and buses, restricting access even for reporters and camera personnel.
During a visit to the KPC, Karachi South Deputy Commissioner (DC) Altaf Sario was informed by Sarbazi that the KPC has been designated a “Hyde Park” venue, traditionally exempt from Section 144’s restrictions on protests. However, DC Sario justified the imposition of Section 144 across Karachi and other parts of Sindh due to the potential risks of riots and violence. He mentioned concerns that unrest could tarnish Pakistan’s image during a time when foreign dignitaries were visiting Islamabad.
According to Sarbazi, after discussions with KPC officials and Sindh Inspector General (IG) of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, South DIG Asad Raza ordered the lifting of all restrictions at the KPC.
Witnesses and organizers reported that police deployments blocked major routes in Karachi, including Sharea Faisal near the Finance & Trade Center, Korangi Road near Qayumabad, the Superhighway Toll Plaza, and along the main MA Jinnah Road near Capri Cinema, where they stopped and checked motorists.
A Dawn.com staffer observed a large police contingent at the Teen Talwar roundabout, equipped with riot shields and armoured vests, and a police water cannon truck stationed near the Hilal-i-Ahmar Medical Centre.
