Jannik Sinner captured his third ATP Masters trophy by overcoming Frances Tiafoe with scores of 7-6 (7/4) and 6-2 at the Cincinnati Open.
On Monday, as the world number one, he demonstrated his readiness for the upcoming US Open by navigating a tough first set and dominating the second. This victory marks Sinner’s 15th career title and fifth in 2024, a year that began with a victory at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Sinner recognized the high tension throughout the matches and was proud of his ability to stay composed during pivotal moments. “There were many ups and downs, but that’s normal. I played well at the big moments of each match,” Sinner noted.
With the US Open set to start on August 26, Sinner, leading second-ranked Novak Djokovic by over 2,000 points, expressed confidence but stressed the importance of recovery before heading to New York. “I’m confident, but recovery is crucial to be ready for New York,” he remarked, eager to showcase his strong form at the major event.
During the match against Tiafoe, Sinner hit 29 winners, including 13 aces, and broke Tiafoe’s serve twice out of eight attempts. Despite Tiafoe’s robust defence, particularly during a tense first set that lasted nearly an hour, Sinner secured an early lead in the tiebreaker. His pressure persisted into the second set, achieving a double break in a lengthy fifth game that extended his advantage.
Post-match, Tiafoe said, “I’m really tired. I’m not used to playing so many matches like you, big guys. Well-played.” His comments underscored the tournament’s intense physical demands. Despite saving three match points, Tiafoe couldn’t counter Sinner’s aggressive play. Sinner decisively concluded the game and the match, solidifying his reputation as a strong contender for the US Open title.
