An Israeli airstrike targeted the Safad school in Gaza City, which was sheltering displaced Palestinians, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, including a woman and a girl. Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the civil defence agency, reported that the strike also caused multiple injuries.
Health officials in Gaza indicated that the school was being used as a shelter for displaced persons but also housed a Hamas police outpost. They stated that the Israeli military identified the site as a Hamas command centre.
The Israeli military confirmed it targeted what it described as a Hamas command and control centre within the school. “The IAF struck Hamas terrorists operating from a command centre situated in what was formerly the Safad school,” a military statement explained.
This incident is part of the ongoing conflict that reignited on October 7 after an attack by Hamas, leading to significant casualties. According to an AFP tally, the subsequent Israeli operations in Gaza have resulted in over 40,000 deaths, with the majority being women and children, as reported by Gaza’s health ministry and the United Nations.
