Dozens protested Saturday outside a foreign ministry office in Mashhad, Iran. This happened after Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed signing a peace deal with the United States.
Fars News Agency shared a video showing women in black chadors chanting against Araghchi in front of the building. Meanwhile, they held red and black flags.
The protest came as the US-Iran peace deal touted by US President Donald Trump and mediator Pakistan faced opposition from Iranian hardline figures. Furthermore, The Straits Times also reported that the proposed deal has drawn hardline criticism in Iran.
Hardline critics said the agreement would not serve Iran’s interests. They argued it could reduce Tehran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz and accused negotiators of making too many concessions.
Hardliners at a rally in Tehran on Saturday chanted against chief negotiators Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Abbas Araghchi over the emerging US deal, shouting, “Ghalibaf, Araghchi, what about our leader’s blood?” and “Araghchi, have shame, leave the country alone.” pic.twitter.com/IRe6xOPOtN

In a Friday interview with Iranian state television, Araghchi said the draft deal called for lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports. He also said the Strait of Hormuz would no longer be managed as it had been.
Araghchi called the waterway one of Iran’s “main instruments of deterrence.”
Other videos on social media, which AFP could not independently verify, showed people outside the foreign ministry building in Tehran chanting for Araghchi to resign. At the same time, they called for the resignation of Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
