Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on Tuesday disclosed his party’s openness to dialogue with all political factions except the PPP, PML-N, and MQM-P, amidst efforts by his adversaries to form a governing coalition for the next five years.
Despite not achieving a majority in the parliament’s lower house, this declaration came as Khan’s rivals sought to ally potentially under PML-N leadership, incorporating former Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) allies. Khan, facing legal challenges linked to violence on May 9, made these remarks during a court appearance.
Khan, addressing the media at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, announced the assignment of the PTI information secretary to initiate discussions with other political entities, barring the aforementioned groups. In light of questions regarding PTI’s potential to establish a federal government, Khan emphasized the party’s intent to contest the election results at the Supreme Court, condemning the elections as unprecedentedly rigged and advocating for a unified stance among parties alleging electoral fraud.
Electoral Integrity and Democratic Values
Imran Khan underscored the necessity of transparent elections to resolve Pakistan’s challenges, arguing that electoral manipulation would exacerbate economic instability. He suggested PTI’s victory was evident when election night results were delayed, accusing Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz Sharif of election loss while asserting PTI candidate Aliya Hamza garnered over 100,000 votes from incarceration.
Khan criticized his opponents’ coalition efforts as an attempt to impose a “money-laundering syndicate” on Pakistan, labelling the Sharif family as the country’s foremost money launderers.
Expressing gratitude towards PTI supporters, Khan lauded the overwhelming mandate and the democratic spirit displayed during the election, praising the role of social media and the diligence of polling agents amidst adversity. He cautioned against establishing a government based on “stolen votes,” predicting detrimental effects on national democracy and economic stability.
Echoing Khan’s sentiments, Shah Mehmood Qureshi celebrated the involvement of PTI’s youthful electorate and highlighted international media claims of electoral rigging. He voiced public disdain for parties opposing PTI and advocated for investigations into rigging allegations, asserting the unacceptability of a government formed through such elections.
