Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued a defamation notice on Tuesday to Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel in response to the minister’s disclosure during a press conference on May 26.
The notice, filed under the Defamation Ordinance of 2002, accuses Patel of spreading false and defamatory information about Imran.
The notice asserts that Patel dishonestly alleged during the press conference that traces of alcohol and cocaine were found in Imran’s urine analysis and also questioned his mental stability, suggesting the need for an appropriate response. However, Imran’s legal team questions the validity of such claims’ accuracy.
Furthermore, the notice highlights the medical report’s failure to mention that Imran had suffered a head injury on the day of his alleged illegal arrest and that no details of a comprehensive trauma examination were provided. It also points out the absence of specific details regarding a mental state examination, despite the report’s emphasis on Imran’s mental condition.
The notice accuses Patel of making these remarks knowingly, consciously, willingly, deliberately, and maliciously, which it deems highly irrational and contradictory to ethical and moral principles. It further contends that the comments violate federal cabinet members’ expected standards and ethics.

Imran’s legal team holds Patel responsible and liable for the circulation and dissemination of defamatory information that has caused damage to Imran’s reputation. Furthermore, it states that Patel’s statements have caused their client emotional trauma and anguish.
The notice demands that Patel publicly retract his statements using the same mode and manner they were made while offering an unconditional apology and admitting to having misstated the information. Additionally, it calls for Patel to pay Rs 10 billion in damages for defaming Imran and making false allegations. The specified amount is intended to be donated to the Shaukat Khanam Memorial Cancer Hospital.
Finally, the notice warns that failure to comply with these demands within 15 days will result in Imran initiating legal proceedings against Patel.
