Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), demanded a key meeting with his party’s negotiation committee.
A meeting between PTI and the government is set for January 28, to strengthen PTI’s stance before the upcoming negotiation round. Although PTI leaders have provided mixed messages regarding the talks, sources revealed that Khan mentioned during his discussions at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail that PTI’s ultimate decision on negotiations would be made after this meeting.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan recently stated that the ongoing talks have been paused, which deviates from previous assertions that negotiations had been entirely halted due to alleged governmental non-cooperation and delays in establishing a judicial commission. This commission is meant to investigate the violent protests that occurred on 9 May 2023 and the subsequent crackdown on PTI protesters in Islamabad on 26 November 2023.
After three seasons, the dialogue between the PTI and the ruling coalition has reached a deadlock. The disagreement centres on the PTI’s demand for the immediate formation of a judicial commission, which the government has proposed to address in the upcoming negotiation round. Gohar’s latest statements suggest that if the government commits to forming this commission, the PTI’s decision to halt talks may be reconsidered.
PTI’s Firm Stance on Judicial Inquiry
PTI Senator Shibli Faraz, speaking outside Adiala Jail, emphasized PTI’s consistent goal of securing an impartial investigation through a judicial commission into the incidents of May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2023. He criticized the government’s ambiguous assurances, noting discrepancies in their commitments regarding the timeline for forming the commission.

As political tensions remain, the PTI reiterated its refusal to participate in the January 28 session called by National Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. After a detailed discussion with Imran Khan, Salman Akram Raja, the PTI Secretary General,, expressed frustrations over the government’s handling of the party’s demands, underscoring the importance of transparency regarding the violent incidents.
Raja also confirmed organizational changes within PTI, announcing Junaid Akbar’s appointment as the PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter president and Mashal Yousafzai as the spokesperson for Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife.
As PTI clarifies its negotiation strategy, the political landscape remains charged with anticipation over the potential outcomes of the impending talks and the broader implications for Pakistan’s political stability.
