A panel of federal government officials and top brass of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) embarked on crucial discussions at Parliament House, aiming to reach a mutual agreement about conducting national and provincial assembly elections on the same date.
The government has nominated key Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) figures to participate in the dialogue, including Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, Law Minister Azam Tarar, and Ayaz Sadiq. In addition, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) representatives Yousaf Raza Gillani and Naveed Qamar are part of the committee. Kishwar Zehra from MQM-P is also a member of the government-designated panel.
Representing PTI are Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Barrister Ali Zafar, and Senior Leader Fawad Chaudhary. However, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) has reportedly chosen not to participate in the negotiations.
These developments follow Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani’s dispatch of individual letters to the leader of the house and the opposition, urging them to nominate members from both treasury and opposition factions to create a unique committee focused on political dialogue. Sanjrani has requested that both leaders, Senator Ishaq Dar and Dr. Shahzad Waseem, submit the names of four individuals to join the special committee within two days.
Sanjrani emphasized that the Senate of Pakistan, as the House of Federation, is constitutionally responsible for maintaining national and political harmony in line with national and public interests. He added that recognizing Parliament as the sole and appropriate forum for resolving political issues, a bipartisan Senate committee has been suggested to address the ongoing political and economic crisis, including organizing general elections.
The House Speaker and the opposition co-chair the exceptional committee, including members from both political parties.
