Islamabad: Key developments and further arrests are expected to take place the murder investigation of slain Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq, said sources in the London police on Friday.

The development is expected after Scotland Yard investigators visited Pakistan and interviewed prime suspect Mohsin Ali Syed. The Scotland Yard team, headed by the detective officer in charge of the Dr Imran Farooq murder investigation, has now reached London after interviewing Mohsin Ali.

Credible sources told in London that Mohsin Ali Syed’s interview, conducted over two days, was taped and recorded. Five officers involved in the case were present during the interview sessions.

The officers are expected to meet the widow of the slain MQM leader next week. Shumaila Imran Farooq will be updated on what was revealed in the interviews of Mohsin, and other suspects Moazzam and Khalid Shamim, the sources said.

According to the sources, Mohsin Ali Syed has named seven people who helped him and suspect Kashif Khan Kamran in London in carry out the murder. Scotland Yard is already aware of some of these names but Syed’s confirmation means that the murder investigation is likely to expand further in the United Kingdom.

The officers involved in the interviews will also submit their report next week to Richard Walton, the counter-terrorism head at Scotland Yard. New arrests are also likely to be carried out in the developments expected next week.

Farooq, 50, a founding member of the MQM, was stabbed and beaten to death in Edgware, northwest London, as he returned home from work on September 16, 2010.

Mohsin Ali Syed’s interview by London police detectives is so far the biggest development in the high-profile murder case.

Prime suspect Mohsin Ali confesses to killing Dr Imran Farooq

Sources in Pakistan told Geo News on Thursday that during his interview with Scotland Yard investigators, prime suspect Mohsin Ali confessed to his direct involvement in the murder of Dr Imran Farooq.

Earlier in July, Mohsin Ali had admitted before a Pakistani JIT that he was present on the spot and attacked the MQM leader with a knife ‘on the eve of Altaf Hussain’s birthday’.

Ali had also revealed that he was an activist of All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organization (APMSO) – the student wing of MQM formed on June 11, 1978. He told the JIT that Moazzam Ali, another key suspect in the case, was the one who arranged his and Kashif’s travel to UK.

Sources quoted Mohsin as admitting that he used to work in Moazzam Ali’s company, Com-net.

Moazzam Ali, according to sources, had also named five leaders of MQM for their alleged involvement in the murder case of Dr Imran Farooq. One of the names is that of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

Moazzam also admitted arranging Mohsin and Kashif’s travel to UK for getting the job done.

Khalid Shamim, another accused in the murder case, revealed that it was his responsibility to pick Kashif and Mohsin from the airport and shift them to a secure location, sources added.
