France beat Sweden 3-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice.
Mbappé opened the scoring just before half-time after France had already hit the woodwork through Mbappé and Michael Olise.
Olise set up Bradley Barcola for France’s second goal in the 53rd minute. The Bayern Munich midfielder then created France’s third, delivering the pass for Mbappé to score again in the 74th minute.
Mbappé moved level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the Golden Boot race at this World Cup. The France captain now has 18 career World Cup goals, one behind Messi’s overall mark of 19.
Mbappé celebrated his first goal with coach Didier Deschamps, who had missed France’s final group match against Norway after travelling home for his mother’s funeral.
France dominated possession and chances against Sweden, whose attack featured Viktor Gyökeres, Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga.
