England’s World Cup hopes now rest with Thomas Tuchel as the German coach tries to end the men’s team’s 60-year wait for a major title.
Tuchel, appointed after Gareth Southgate’s exit, takes England into the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a perfect qualifying campaign, according to FIFA coverage. England last won the tournament in 1966.
The former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich coach faced early criticism over his nationality.
Some British media and political figures questioned the appointment of a German to lead England.
That debate eased as Tuchel won over sections of the media and supporters during qualification. He now faces a harder test after making bold squad calls for the tournament.
Sky Sports reported that Tuchel left out Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Maguire from his 26-man squad. Ivan Toney earned a surprise recall.

Tuchel said tournament success depends on the strongest group, not simply collecting the best talents.
England’s squad still includes major names such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice.
