The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) earlier yesterday declared the honour killings as unpardonable sin and contrary to the teachings of Islam.

Chief Research Officer CII, Dr Inamullah said in a statement that CII declared the murder of women or girls in the name of honour as ‘un-Islamic’ and an ‘unpardonable sin’.

He said that the whole nation is perturbed over the disturbing incidents of crimes against women during the last one month.

Last day a woman in Lahore, Zeenat Bibi, was set on fire by her mother for marrying a man of her own choice. Zeenat’s mother later confessed to the crime.

Earlier this month, A 19-year-old school teacher from Murree was tortured and set on fire after refusing a marriage proposal while last month, a 16-year-old girl was strangled and set on fire allegedly for helping her friend escape the village to marry of her free will.

In October 1999, the CII declared the honour killings as un-Islamic when the murder case of Samia Imran highlighted by media.

CII had constituted a working group which recommended that Islam does not allow anyone to take law into his own hand against even the perpetrators of major sins ‘Kabair’.

The working group was of the opinion that court is the right authority to punish the criminals. An individual has no right to punish any criminal even if he or she is caught red handed.

The working group had declared that if a person kills anyone as a result of provocation, court will be the right forum to decide about the nature of crime.
