Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif visited North Waziristan Agency (NWA) earlier today and reviewed the progress of the last phase of Zarbe-Azb Operation.

In a statement on social media, DG ISPR Lt-Gen Asim Bajwa said that the army chief was briefed in detail by commanders about operational gains.

“Since start of the last phase of the operation, more than 800 sq kilometers of area has been secured,” he said.

Lauding successful completion of Shawal Operation, the COAS acknowledged exceptional achievements and emphasized on consolidating gains and resettle TDPs to the best of our abilities.

“The COAS was apprised that since start of last phase in February 2016, in treacherous terrain of Shawal, more than 800  sq KM of area has been secured inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists,” said the ISPR statement.

General Raheel Sharif applauded the successful completion of Shawal Operation and acknowledged exceptional achievements, courage, determination and sacrifices of troops in achieving the objectives.

He, however, emphasised on consolidating the gains and resettle internally displaced persons  back in their areas.

Talking of breaking the nexus between terrorists and their facilitators sitting outside FATA, COAS directed to undertake large scale combing ops immediately to seek out terrorists, their sleeper cells and facilitators in areas other than FATA and enhance reach of the LEAs.

Speaking to officers and men, the army chief said “standing shoulder to shoulder with us, the entire nation highly values the sacrifices being rendered in this fight against terrorism.”
