WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump awarded US science and technology medals to six technology leaders, including Elon Musk, on Thursday.
The honours recognised their contributions to scientific discovery and innovation. At the Institute of Peace, the president presented the awards during the “Science: A New Golden Age” summit.
SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk and Google co-founder Sergey Brin received the National Medal of Science. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chief executive Lisa Su received the same honour.
Meanwhile, Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, alongside Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella.
While praising Musk’s contributions to US national interests, Trump called him “our modern-day Thomas Edison”. He also praised Nvidia’s global reach and argued that his administration’s policies would maintain American technological leadership.

Turning to artificial intelligence, Trump described the Genesis Mission as an effort to tackle scientific problems using superintelligence. He said the White House had brokered an accord on superintelligence the previous week.

Separately, the president said he had signed an order on quantum computing. His administration aims to deliver a quantum computer for scientific discovery by 2028.
