A team of Chinese researchers has made a groundbreaking advance in satellite internet technology, achieving a 1Gbps data transmission speed—five times faster than SpaceX’s Starlink. Announced on June 25, 2025, this innovation, led by Liu Chao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Wu Jian of Peking University, could redefine global connectivity by overcoming atmospheric turbulence, a major hurdle in space-based communications.

The experiment combined Adaptive Optics (AO) and Mode Diversity Reception (MDR) to deliver fast, stable connections. Conducted at the Lijiang Observatory using a 5.9-foot telescope and a two-watt laser, the setup achieved a 20% lower error rate than prior methods. Unlike Starlink’s satellites, which operate at 341 miles above Earth, the Chinese satellite operates at 22,807 miles, making its speed and reliability even more impressive.

Chinese researchers have just achieved a new 1Gbps data transmission from a geostationary satellite – this kind of speed is unheard of, even for Elon Musk's Starlink. https://t.co/8jJpbG2gT7

Implications for Connectivity

This technology promises transformative applications:

  • Earth-Based Internet: Faster, more reliable service for remote areas, rivalling Starlink and traditional broadband.
  • Space Missions: Enhanced communications for satellite navigation and deep-space exploration.
  • Global Competition: If commercialised, it could challenge existing satellite internet providers, driving innovation and affordability.

The findings, published in Acta Optica Sinica, remain a proof of concept, with commercialisation still in the experimental phase.

The 1Gbps milestone highlights China’s growing space technology prowess and potential to disrupt the satellite internet market. By addressing atmospheric challenges, this breakthrough offers a glimpse into a future of seamless global connectivity, particularly for underserved regions. However, scaling the technology for widespread use will require further development and investment.
