Azan Awais Test century on debut made the Pakistan opener the 14th national batter to reach three figures in his first Test innings against Bangladesh on Sunday.
The 21-year-old left-hander resumed day three on 85 not out at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. He completed his century in the 51st over of Pakistan’s innings with a single off Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana.
Azan joined Pakistan’s Test debut century list featuring Javed Miandad, Younis Khan and Fawad Alam. Khalid Ibadulla became the first Pakistani batter to achieve the feat with 166 against Australia in 1964.
The opener also became only the third Pakistani batter to score a Test debut century in away conditions. Umar Akmal and Fawad Alam previously reached the milestone in Dunedin and Colombo in 2009.
Azan fell 22 deliveries after completing his hundred when experienced Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed dismissed him. He scored 103 off 165 balls and hit 14 fours in his debut innings.
Yasir Hameed remains the only Pakistani batter to score centuries in both innings of his debut Test. He made 170 and 105 against Bangladesh in 2003.
