After the Pakistan Supreme Court’s landmark judgment upholding the establishment of military courts in the country, stay on execution of six hardcore militants is vacated.
The apex court had ordered the stay of execution of six militants convicted by military courts in April this year, Minister of State for Law Ashtar Ausaf Ali told media after the Supreme Court announced its landmark judgment today.
Military courts have heard at least 100 militants’ cases and passed judgment in at least 27, the law ministry said in June. The military published the names of six men sentenced to death in one case.
The militants, belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), are Noor Saeed, Haider Ali, Murad Khan, Inayat Ullah, Israr Uddin and Qari Zahir were awarded death sentence by military court, while another, Abbas, was given life-imprisonment.
The sentences were ratified by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Raheel Sharif.
However, the supreme court had stayed the executions on a petition filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) seeking a halt to the implementation of death sentences.
Today, the Supreme Court of Pakistan rejected all petitions against the 18th and 21st constitutional amendments, and upholds establishment of military courts set-up to try hardcore militants following the deadly Peshawar attach on a school last year.
