ASCOT: Ireland’s Billy Loughnane won Britain’s champion Flat jockey title on Saturday at age 20. He became the youngest rider to claim the crown since Charlie Elliott in 1923.
Loughnane beat fellow Irishman Oisin Murphy, 31, a five-time champion, to secure the championship at British Champions Day.
Before the presentation, Great British Racing listed Loughnane among 159 championship winners. His broader calendar-year tally already exceeded 220 victories. Bow Echo supplied three major successes during his campaign.
After winning the 2,000 Guineas, the horse added the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Loughnane partnered the George Boughey-trained horse throughout those victories. Reflecting on his rise, Loughnane recalled the modest expectations he had before starting his professional career nearly four years ago.
“My aim then was just to have a few winners really,” he said during a Great British Racing media call. He added that he could hardly have imagined reaching his current position so quickly.
Although the championship is settled, Loughnane has another target before the year ends. He is pursuing Gordon Richards’ 1947 record of 269 winners in a calendar year.
