Ali Khamenei’s funeral arrangements will include burial at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, Iran, after farewell ceremonies in Tehran and Qom, a Tehran municipal official said.
Mohammad-Amin Tavakkolizadeh, Tehran mayor’s deputy for social and cultural affairs, said the burial site followed Khamenei’s will and his family’s recommendation. He said the ceremonies could begin in the second half of June.
Tavakkolizadeh said Tehran could host three days of farewell ceremonies and a 24-hour funeral procession. He named Imam Khomeini’s Grand Mosalla or Imam Khomeini’s mausoleum as possible venues for the capital’s events.
The body will then be moved to Qom and Mashhad for further ceremonies, according to the official. He said up to 20 million people could participate in the events in Tehran.
The funeral is also expected to draw mourners from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and India.
