Asif Merchant, the Pakistani man, faces charges in the United States for allegedly collaborating with Iran to orchestrate an assassination plot against former U.S. President Donald Trump. This charge follows the U.S. action in 2020, where Iran’s top Revolutionary Guards commander, Qassem Soleimani, was killed.
According to the criminal complaint, Merchant attempted to recruit individuals in the U.S. to execute this plot. He had spent time in Iran before travelling to the U.S. and was subsequently detained under murder-for-hire charges by a federal court in Brooklyn, New York. As documented in court records, a federal judge ordered his detention on July 16.
The Foreign Office in Islamabad has acknowledged the situation, confirming that they are communicating with U.S. authorities and waiting for more details regarding the charges against Merchant. FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said they are monitoring the investigation closely.
According to Geo News, Merchant worked in Karachi as a bank branch manager before these events in 2010. He managed an Asset and Liability Portfolio exceeding Rs1,850 million, servicing clients across various sectors, including Petroleum, Textiles, Leather, Paper Products, Chemicals, and Pharmaceuticals.
Asif Merchant’s role also encompassed client marketing to enhance the business portfolio, participating in the Retail Credit Committee, and implementing internal controls. Additionally, he was responsible for reviewing and monitoring branch financials—covering assets, liabilities, profits, losses, and revenues and preparing and presenting interim and annual reviews.
