WhatsApp’s Launches Advanced Chat Privacy Feature

WhatsApp unveiled its Advanced Chat Privacy feature on April 23, 2025, introducing enhanced security measures to protect sensitive conversations.

The feature, announced via a blog post, prevents chat exports, media auto-downloads, and Meta AI interactions, adding a layer of privacy beyond end-to-end encryption. It’s now available to select users on the latest WhatsApp Android (2.25.12.21) and iOS updates, with a broader rollout planned over the coming weeks.

The Advanced Chat Privacy feature empowers users with greater control over their conversations, particularly in group chats or discussions involving sensitive topics like health or community organising. Its core functionalities include:

  • Blocking Chat Exports: Prevents participants from exporting entire conversations, reducing the risk of unauthorised sharing.
  • Disabling Media Auto-Downloads: Stops shared photos or videos from automatically saving to device galleries, protecting private content.
  • Restricting Meta AI: Excludes messages from AI processing, ensuring they remain private and inaccessible to automated systems.
  • Transparency Notifications: Sends system messages to alert all chat participants when privacy settings are toggled, fostering trust.

These measures make the feature ideal for users sharing personal or confidential information with less familiar contacts, enhancing confidence in secure communication.

How to Enable the Feature

Users can activate Advanced Chat Privacy by:

  1. Opening the desired individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the chat name at the top.
  3. Selecting “Advanced Chat Privacy” from the settings menu.

Once enabled, a notification informs all participants, ensuring transparency. Disabling the feature triggers a similar alert, maintaining awareness of privacy changes.

WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption already secures messages, but the Advanced Chat Privacy feature addresses additional vulnerabilities, such as unintended data exposure through exports or AI interactions. First spotted in the Android beta update (2.25.12.21), the feature reflects WhatsApp’s response to user demands for robust privacy controls, especially in group settings. The company plans to expand its capabilities, though current limitations allow message forwarding and screenshots, focusing on protecting the conversation’s overall context.

User Availability and Future Plans

The feature is rolling out to users with the latest WhatsApp versions on the Google Play Store and App Store, with full availability expected soon. WhatsApp confirmed this is an initial version, with future updates to introduce new privacy enhancements, potentially addressing forwarding or screenshot restrictions.

The Advanced Chat Privacy feature strengthens WhatsApp’s position as a privacy-focused platform, but its phased rollout may frustrate users awaiting access. Allowing screenshots and forwarding, while practical, could undermine the feature’s goal of total content control, as sensitive information can still be shared. The transparency notifications are a strong trust-building measure, yet their effectiveness depends on user awareness. Compared to competitors like Signal, which restricts screenshots, WhatsApp’s approach is less stringent but aligns with its broader user base’s needs. The exclusion of Meta AI interactions addresses privacy concerns about data use, but clearer communication on AI’s role could enhance user trust.
