In Madian, a district within Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a man accused of desecrating the Quran was lynched by a mob after being forcibly removed from police custody. Initially identified as a visitor from Sialkot, the man was accused of disrespecting the Quran, which led to his apprehension and handover to local police by community members.
Following his detention, announcements made in local mosques incited the public, leading to a violent mob storming the Madian Police Station. The station was subsequently set ablaze by the mob. In response, police officers fired upon the agitated crowd, which also torched a police vehicle, resulting in it being destroyed.
The mob then extracted the accused from the station, subjected him to severe physical assault on the streets, and ultimately killed him. The deceased’s body was later set on fire in the centre of the Madian market. At the time of the incident, the victim had been residing as a tourist in a local hotel.
The events have escalated tensions in Madian, leading to the closure of the market and a heightened security presence. The local authorities are now working to restore order and investigate the circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.
