Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim denounced an attempt by elements in the military after bridges were partially shut down in Istanbul and jets flew low over Ankara.
According to AFP, Yildirim talking to NTV television by telephone said “We are working on the possibility of an attempt. We will not allow this attempt,”
“Those who are in this illegal act will pay the highest price,” he added, saying it would not be correct to describe the move as a “coup”.
However, Details are emerging out of Turkey, where military vehicles and personnel are in the streets of Istanbul and Ankara on July 15, various reports on Twitter show.
Yildirim has said that elements within the military had taken actions without authorization, but would not say a coup had taken place. In Istanbul, military personnel are blocking the Bosporus Bridge, while there are reports in both cities of the army taking up key positions and setting up checkpoints.
In Ankara, Turkish F-16 fighter jets have carried out flyovers over the city, and roads to the General Staff headquarters have been blocked, according to Turkish media. There have also been unconfirmed reports of gunfire at the headquarters building. Notably, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was last reported to be on vacation in Bodrum, on Turkey’s southwestern coast.
