U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that Ukraine’s NATO membership is impractical and that reclaiming all its lost territory seems unlikely.
In a major diplomatic step, Trump discussed the Ukraine war in separate phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This marks his first major attempt to mediate the ongoing conflict, which he has pledged to end.
Trump & Putin Set to Meet in Saudi Arabia
Trump revealed that he and Putin plan to meet in the future, most likely in Saudi Arabia. He described his call with the Russian leader as a “good conversation” that lasted over an hour. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow and that both leaders agreed to meet soon.
Zelensky’s office reported that Trump and Zelensky spoke for about an hour, while the Kremlin stated that Trump’s call with Putin lasted nearly 90 minutes.

Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia and the UAE were considered potential venues. Trump confirmed plans for an in-person meeting with Putin in Saudi Arabia, signalling a potential diplomatic shift that could disadvantage Ukraine in ongoing peace talks.
Following his call with Putin, Trump emphasized that both leaders had agreed to start immediate Ukraine peace talks, marking a significant development in the war.
