STAR1, a Chinese humanoid robot, has shattered speed records by running at 8 mph in the Gobi Desert. Equipped with AI and sneakers, it is the fastest bipedal robot to date.

Developed by Robot Era, STAR1 stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 143 pounds, showcasing advanced robotics from the Chinese company.

Gobi Desert Test
In a rigorous field test, Robot Era deployed two STAR1 robots in the Gobi Desert of northwestern China. The experiment compared performance differences between a sneaker-equipped robot and one without. The AI-powered, sneaker-wearing robot demonstrated superior ability to handle diverse terrains such as grass and gravel, maintaining its top speed consistently over 34 minutes.

Record-Breaking Speed
Achieving a top speed of 8 mph, STAR1 surpassed the previous record held by Unitree’s H1 robot, which reached 7.4 mph earlier in March 2024. Unlike H1, which maintained ground contact during movement, STAR1’s enhanced design allowed for a true running motion.

Advanced AI and Design
Robot Era equipped STAR1 with AI hardware capable of conducting 275 trillion operations per second—far surpassing the capacity of most high-end laptops. With 12 degrees of freedom across its joints, STAR1 offers extensive mobility. This achievement aligns with global advancements in humanoid robotics, including Tesla’s Optimus Gen-2, Figure 01, and Boston Dynamics’ latest Atlas robot, highlighting a significant leap in robotic technology and design.
