Scotland Yard Thursday confirmed that police dropped money laundering charges involving Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain, Muhammad Anwar, Sarfraz Merchant and others.
According to Scotland Yard, the charges were dropped on the recommendation of Crown Prosecution Service over insufficient evidence.
It said there is insufficient evidence to prove that the money seized at Altaf Hussain was the proceeds of crime.
The money laundering investigation was launched after the Metropolitan Police discovered hundreds of thousands of pounds during two raids — one on an MQM office and another on Altaf Hussain’s residence in London.
The raids were conducted in connection with the investigation into Dr Imran Farooq’s murder.
The case was dropped over insufficient evidence to prove that the money seized at Altaf’s house was the proceeds of crime.
Scotland Yard says no further action will be taken against Altaf in the money-laundering case.
