Roberto Martinez quits as Portugal coach after their 1-0 World Cup last-16 defeat to Spain at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
The 52-year-old Spaniard confirmed Monday that the match was his last in charge of the Portugal national team.
Spain won the tie through a late goal from Mikel Merino, ending Portugal’s World Cup run and Cristiano Ronaldo’s final tournament appearance.
Martinez had led Portugal since 2023. His departure had been expected because his contract was set to expire after the tournament.
He had faced criticism for continuing to select ageing captain Ronaldo throughout Portugal’s campaign.
“It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team,” Martinez said after the defeat.

He thanked Portuguese fans and said the period had brought him pride and memories that would last a lifetime.
Before taking the Portugal job, Martinez managed Belgium. He also coached Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton in British football.
