In the aftermath of Spain’s triumphant victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, a moment intended to be celebratory took a controversial turn. Luis Rubiales, the President of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has come under scrutiny for kissing star player Jenni Hermoso on the lips. As Hermoso collected her medal, the unexpected gesture prompted a widespread global reaction.
Rubiales Acknowledges His Mistake
Taking to Spanish television to address the incident, a contrite Rubiales said, “Certainly, I made a mistake, and I have to acknowledge that.” He further emphasized that the act, though unintended, was carried out in the peak of jubilation. “It was done without any ill intention in a moment of the highest exuberance. Here we saw it as natural and normal, but outside, it has caused a commotion,” he expressed.
He also noted the importance of taking responsibility, especially when representing the federation, and pledged to be more cautious.
Spain’s sports minister, Miquel Iceta, was among the first to voice his concerns, emphasizing the need for Rubiales to apologize. Iceta remarked on Spanish public radio that congratulating a player with a kiss on the lips was unacceptable behaviour. Highlighting the role of public officials, he added, “public officials have to be extremely careful because we are giving a message to society, and the message is equal rights; it is respected.”
Jenni Hermoso herself addressed the incident on various platforms. While on an Instagram live video shared by journalist Irati Vida, Hermoso expressed her surprise at the unexpected gesture, noting, “Hey, I didn’t like it, eh.” However, during her appearance on the radio program ‘El Tiempo de Juego’ on Cadena COPE, she downplayed the incident, attributing it to the moment’s emotion and expressing hope that it would not be blown out of proportion. Further speaking with Radio Marca, she emphasized the team’s achievements, stating, “We’re champions, and I stay with that.”
