The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a change in its election strategy, deciding that its candidates will run as independents in the upcoming elections.
PTI’s former chairman, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, communicated this decision to journalists at the Supreme Court in Islamabad. He emphasized that the party would list all independent candidates and their respective electoral symbols. The absence of a unified symbol for PTI could potentially lead to voter confusion, impacting the party’s chances in the polls.
Following the Supreme Court’s upholding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to strip PTI of its ‘bat’ symbol, Additionally, an attempt to collaborate with Tehreek-e-Insaf Nazriati (PTI-N) for their symbol fell through, further complicating PTI’s election plans.
The ECP has also been vigilant about preventing deceptive practices by candidates attempting to use the electoral symbol of another political party, particularly when it contradicts their original party affiliation.
PTI’s Response and Future Plans
Gohar expressed disappointment with the Supreme Court’s ruling, deeming it “controversial” and stating the party’s intention to challenge the verdict. Despite losing the title of chairman due to the invalidation of intra-party polls, Gohar remains confident in the party’s strength and voter support. He stressed the importance of the court ensuring fundamental rights for all individuals.
PTI leader Barrister Ali Zafar revealed that the party had anticipated this decision and was fully prepared to compete vigorously in the February 8 elections, demonstrating their resilience and adaptability in political challenges.
