Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to address the National Assembly today (Thursday) to take the House into confidence over country s prevailing situation.
According to sources, the Prime Minister will express his determination regarding supremacy of democracy and constitution and will highlight his determination to hold on to his job.
He will also brief the House over government’s performance and highlight the dialogue process with protesting opposition parties Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
On Wednesday, federal ministers and opposition politicians met PTI and PAT’s leaders but talks ended for the day with the sides appearing no closer to resolving a week-long political crisis that has the whole country on tender hooks.
Hordes of followers of retired-cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and populist cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri have been demonstrating outside the parliament building in Islamabad, trying to force Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office.
Khan and Qadri say last year’s general election that swept Sharif to power by a landslide was rigged and are demanding his resignation. And in Qadri’s case arrest of both the CM Punjab Shabaz Sharif as well as his elder brother Mian Nawas Sharif.
