Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the PM electric bike scheme for government employees up to BPS-16, offering electric motorcycles through affordable and easy instalment plans.
The initiative forms part of Pakistan’s wider push to promote electric vehicles, reduce fuel import costs, and support cleaner transport across the country. Officials discussed the proposal during a high-level meeting in Islamabad focused on accelerating Pakistan’s transition to electric transport. The scheme targets government employees from BPS-1 to BPS-16. This includes lower- and middle-income public sector workers, who often feel the greatest impact from rising petrol prices.
Under the plan, eligible employees will be able to receive electric motorcycles on easy instalments. However, officials have not yet announced the final monthly instalment amount, down payment, or payment period. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the relevant ministries and departments to fast-track the programme’s rollout.
The prime minister also stressed that officials must distribute subsidies under the National Electric Vehicle Policy transparently. He instructed them to implement the electric bike programme in a fair and accountable way, without misusing public funds.
Officials told the meeting that Pakistan aims to convert 30% of all vehicles to electric power within the next five years. The government expects this shift to reduce reliance on imported fuel and save around $4.5 billion in fuel import costs. Shehbaz Sharif said electric transport is important for Pakistan’s future energy needs, especially as regional dynamics and fuel demand continue to change.
The move toward electric bikes is expected to support both economic and environmental goals. Electric motorcycles can help reduce petrol use, lower urban pollution, and support Pakistan’s broader clean transport targets.
The government also sees EV adoption as a way to improve energy security and reduce pressure on the national import bill.
