The parliamentary committee which will decide on the terms of reference (ToR) on which the Panama leaks investigation will be carried out, will hold their seventh meeting later today.
The deadlock on deciding the terms of reference between both government and opposition members remains. During the last meeting, it was suggested by opposition members that a new law should be passed to investigate Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.
It was also suggested during the last meeting that the Prime Minister’s accountability process should take place within three months and that of his family, within a span of six months so as to ensure that this issue does not persist till the next year.
According to PTI’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the government was provided till Friday to form a consensus regarding the terms of reference.
Opposition parties have called for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down, after leaked documents from a Panamanian tax firm traced offshore companies to his children Maryam, Hassan and Hussain Nawaz.
Opposition parties such as the PPP and PTI have leveled allegations of money laundering, tax evasion and tax fraud at the Prime Minister. The 12-member parliamentary committee was announced by PM Nawaz last month.
