The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s provisional suspension on Saturday and announced disciplinary proceedings over the 41-year-old’s departure from Portugal’s national team squad.
FPF classified the case as urgent. Ronaldo remains suspended pending a decision on his final punishment.
On Tuesday, the forward apologised to supporters and accepted that the federation should punish him for leaving. He said he was not retiring from international football.
After serving any sanction, Ronaldo remained willing “to compete and win for our national team”.
His departure followed a playing-time dispute with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the UEFA Nations League. Ronaldo accused Jesus of failing to honour an agreement to give him minutes on the pitch.
Against Norway on September 27, Ronaldo warmed up as a substitute but never entered the match. He subsequently learned that he would not start the October 1 fixture against Denmark and left the squad.
Jesus declined to discuss Ronaldo’s statement when questioned.
Before the Denmark fixture, Jesus said on September 30 that he considered using Ronaldo against Norway but ultimately chose not to.

A former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward, Ronaldo holds Portugal’s records for goals and appearances. FPF’s senior-team profile lists 146 goals in 234 appearances.
Portugal won all four of their Nations League matches and secured a quarter-final place with two games remaining.
Ronaldo resumed club football on Friday with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr. He scored in their 3-0 Saudi Pro League win over Diriyah.
