Firefighters continued battling intense wildfires around Los Angeles into Saturday night, as escalating winds drove the flames towards areas previously unaffected. The fires have already claimed at least 16 lives, devastating communities and challenging both firefighters and millions of California residents.
Despite the coordinated efforts of ground and aerial crews, the Palisades Fire expanded further on Saturday. It threatened the valuable Getty Center Art Museum collections and advanced towards the densely populated San Fernando Valley.
“We’re a nervous wreck,” Sarah Cohen told the Los Angeles Times, expressing the fluctuating hope and despair as firefighters battled the blaze near her Tarzana home.
The National Weather Service has warned that critical fire weather conditions in Southern California will likely worsen and continue into next week. These conditions could cause existing fires to spread and new ones to ignite.
By Saturday, firefighters had gained control over 11% of the Palisades fire, which had scorched 23,600 acres. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire consumed 14,000 acres and was 15% contained. Cal Fire’s Todd Hopkins noted that the fires have obliterated over 12,000 structures, including houses, outbuildings, RVs, and sheds.

The arrival of displaced residents will likely worsen the existing rental housing crisis in Los Angeles. In response to looting reports, authorities enforced a nighttime curfew and police, and the National Guard established checkpoints to protect the disaster zones.
City officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, presented a united front in response to reports of internal conflicts and rumours about the fire chief’s dismissal. As you can see here, the chief and I are in lockstep with our primary mission—to navigate through this emergency,” Bass stated confidently during a press conference.

Search teams with cadaver dogs are scouring the debris, as several individuals remain missing, and there are concerns that the death toll might rise.
A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fires, with the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and local authorities involved. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized the thoroughness of the inquiry, stating, “We are not going to leave any stone unturned. If this turns out to be a criminal act, we need to hold whoever is behind this responsible.”
While wildfires can be naturally occurring and play a critical role in the ecological cycle, urban expansion increases human vulnerability, and climate change—driven by unchecked fossil fuel consumption—intensifies the conditions that lead to such destructive fires.
