A strange fire has been raging for six days in Karachi’s Korangi Creek area, prompting the district administration to seal off the site.
The fire, which ignited on Saturday, remains uncontrolled despite initial firefighting attempts. Authorities have suspended operations due to extreme heat, with KMC and Cantonment Board fire trucks on standby.
The fire erupted after a construction firm drilled 1,200 feet for a tube well, unleashing high-pressure methane gas. Sand and water samples are analysed to determine the gas’s nature and volume. “If reserves are small, it’ll burn out soon,” the administration said. “If large, we’ll secure the area further.”

Former Chief Fire Officer Kazim Ali advises against dousing the flames. “Let it burn out naturally,” he urged, warning that interference could spread gas and endanger residents. Another expert proposed a 90-meter restricted zone and a soil mound to contain the blaze. Fire crews and police remain on-site, but efforts to extinguish it have failed.
