Former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie recently explained his resignation as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, attributing it to unclear coaching roles.
Gillespie stated that the ambiguity regarding High-Performance Coach Tim Nielsen’s status significantly influenced his decision. “I was completely unaware of the decision not to retain Tim Nielsen,” he remarked. This issue and previous ones made him question his necessity in the role.
He described his diminishing role. He felt reduced to minimal duties, such as “giving catching practice to players on match mornings.”
Communication was a central concern for him. “A head coach must have full communication with selectors and others,” he emphasized, stressing the importance of being informed about squad selections in advance.

After Nielsen’s departure, decision-making became more complicated. “I learned about the new selection committee through a group chat text after the first match against England,” he shared, indicating a lack of direct communication.
The decision by the new selection committee to drop star batter Babar Azam from the second Test match against England highlighted these coordination issues.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not renew Nielsen’s contract, despite his recent appointment as “high-performance red-ball coach” in August 2024 and his commitment to future series.
After his departure, Aqib Javed took over as interim head coach for the upcoming Test series against South Africa, scheduled from December 20, 2024, to January 7, 2025, in Centurion and Cape Town.
