A senior US State Department official stated that Israel has not provided assurances to the Biden administration that it will avoid striking Iran’s nuclear facilities.
The statement from the US State Department official came in response to inquiries from CNN regarding whether Israel had offered guarantees concerning its military intentions toward Iran.
The official, speaking on Friday, expressed uncertainty about whether Israel would launch retaliatory actions on the anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas against Israel, noting, “It’s really hard to tell.”
“We hope and expect to see some wisdom as well as strength, but as you guys know, no guarantees,” the official added, underscoring the unpredictability of the situation.
This week’s developments also saw Iran launching missiles at Israel, reportedly in response to the killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Amidst ongoing regional tensions, Israel has continued its military operations, conducting air and ground attacks against Lebanon and strikes in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been forthright in his statements, declaring that Iran would “pay” for these attacks.
