Social media is abuzz with news about the introduction of a new marriage registration system in Pakistan.
The system reportedly shifts from traditional methods to a tablet-based approach. According to sources, this system will involve creating an account on the tablet for the marriage officiant, who will handle all procedures digitally.
The officiant will collect the marriage fee and conduct biometric verifications by scanning the identity cards of the marriage witnesses. Verification will validate the witnesses’ identities and fingerprints before the marriage is officially registered.
Social media reports also indicate that the officiant will take a photograph of the groom. They will link this photograph to NADRA’s database to check for legal issues, such as outstanding warrants or tax evasion allegations against the groom. If any issues arise, authorities could detain the groom at the ceremony.
However, when approached for confirmation by Siasat Pakistan, Umar Saeed, Deputy Director of NADRA, clarified that he was unaware of any such updates to the marriage registration system. He noted that while NADRA’s role includes verifying identity cards and providing necessary software, provincial governments would primarily manage any changes to the system.
Saeed also noted that no provincial government has consulted NADRA on this issue, implying that implementing such a system would require substantial coordination with NADRA.
