Hyundai has set a new benchmark in autonomous driving by introducing the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi, an innovative autonomous vehicle.
Developed with Motional, this AI-driven car underwent a rigorous driving test in Las Vegas, showcasing its proficiency on highways and in complex urban scenarios.
Navigating through the bustling streets of Las Vegas, including the iconic Strip, the Ioniq 5 faced a unique challenge: a driving test. Although it couldn’t officially be licensed, the vehicle completed a comprehensive evaluation similar to Nevada’s driving license examination.
Kandice Jones, a seasoned DMV examiner with a quarter-century experience, sat in the passenger seat. Jones, who has disqualified countless applicants for safety reasons, applied the same stringent criteria to the Ioniq 5. The evaluation focused on speed, lane changes, complete stops, turns, lane maintenance, and reaction times.
Equipped with advanced sensors, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, the Ioniq 5 successfully navigated the test route. The examiner, impressed by its performance, acknowledged its success. However, the achievement remains unofficial as the vehicle did not obtain a recognized license.
