SAN FRANCISCO: Anthropic launched Sonnet 5.5 on Monday as a faster, lower-cost AI model for customers handling routine, scoped tasks.
The company priced Sonnet 5.5 at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Anthropic said the model performs better than its predecessor at coding and knowledge work.
It can also handle scoped tasks and create documents, slides and spreadsheets. Research product manager Theo Chu said Sonnet targets cost-conscious customers who may not need the deeper judgement offered by Opus 5.5.
The launch follows Opus 5.5, which Anthropic introduced less than a week earlier. Haiku 5.5, the cheapest model in the suite, is due to arrive later.
The company’s second launch since CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of development. Sonnet 5.5 is a faster, lower-cost offering from Anthropic.

The company said it is better at coding, completing scoped tasks and creating polished documents, slides and spreadsheets than its predecessor.
Anthropic said Sonnet 5.5 does not advance the frontier of its model capabilities. As a result, most alignment testing focused on risks that apply across capability levels.

However, the company said cybersecurity performance improved substantially over the previous version. Sonnet 5.5 therefore launches with safeguards similar to those used for Anthropic’s most capable models.
Anthropic also says the model requires fewer tokens per task than its predecessor. Sonnet 5.5 is available across Anthropic’s platforms and through Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
