Daniil Medvedev, the 2023 Miami Open champion, faced a surprising second-round elimination on Friday, losing 6-2, 6-3 to Spain’s Jaume Munar.
Munar, ranked 56th, achieved his third career victory against a top-10 opponent, visibly frustrating Medvedev, who threw his racket multiple times during the match.
Medvedev committed 32 unforced errors and could not capitalize on two break points in the final game. Despite a persistent back issue, the Russian chose not to use it as an excuse and praised Munar’s performance.
“I wasn’t 100% physically, but I tried my best. Every day was better, but I had some problems after Indian Wells. He played well, and that’s why he won,” Medvedev said.
What. It. Means. 😤

Novak Djokovic Equals Rafael Nadal’s Record
In contrast, Novak Djokovic delivered a dominant performance, defeating Australia’s Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6 (7/1). The victory snapped Djokovic’s three-match losing streak and marked his 410th Masters 1000 win, tying Rafael Nadal’s record.
Karen Khachanov ended Nick Kyrgios’ comeback hopes with a 7-6 (7/3), 6-0 victory. Kyrgios, who recently returned from wrist surgery, had secured his first tour-level win since October 2022 in the first round but couldn’t overcome Khachanov’s strong performance.
World number three Carlos Alcaraz lost to Belgium’s David Goffin on Friday. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek overcame a second-set challenge in the women’s draw to defeat Caroline Garcia 6-2, 7-5.
Swiatek, who lost to Mirra Andreeva in the Indian Wells semi-finals, rallied from 3-1 down in the second set and saved a set point at 5-4 to secure the win.
Britain’s Emma Raducanu showcased her resilience in a thrilling three-set match against eighth-seeded Emma Navarro, winning 7-6 (8/6), 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) after nearly three hours of intense play.
