Carlos Alcaraz overcame a setback to defeat Tommy Paul on Tuesday, setting the stage for a repeat Wimbledon semi-final against Daniil Medvedev. The match under No. 1 Court’s roof saw Alcaraz, the Spanish world’s third defending champion, rally from a first-set loss, securing a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory. He seeks his fourth Grand Slam title.
Paul, seeded 12th, began strongly, breaking Alcaraz twice during a lengthy 72-minute set. He continued his aggressive play early in the second set. However, Alcaraz regained his form, breaking Paul’s serve to even the match. Dominating the third set with three breaks, Alcaraz controlled the pace, and his precision in the fourth set was evident as he won 92 percent of his first serves and committed only four unforced errors.
Alcaraz, who aspires to become the sixth man to win the French Open and Wimbledon consecutively, admitted to challenges during his quarter-final. “Even if I’m struggling to find solutions and the opponent plays great, I believe I can eventually come back and find a way,” he stated.
Anticipating his upcoming semi-final against the Russian fifth seed, Medvedev—who had just defeated top contender Jannik Sinner—Alcaraz acknowledged Medvedev’s excellent form. “He’s in really good shape, so I must play my best and keep believing in myself to win,” he expressed, hopeful of replicating last year’s victory.
