In a riveting turn of events, Barcelona has claimed the Spanish championship after an impressive 4-2 victory over local rivals Espanyol. The Blaugrana now enjoy a comfortable 14-point lead over Real Madrid with just four games remaining in LaLiga Santander.
The Derbi Barcelona on Sunday evening in Cornella was a high-stakes match, with Espanyol fighting to avoid relegation and Barcelona eyeing a win to secure the league title.
Barcelona had a perfect start, leaving Espanyol in a state of despair. In the first 20 minutes, Alejandro Balde assisted Robert Lewandowski and netted his first club goal, quickly establishing a 2-0 lead. Balde showcased his skills by delivering a perfect cross to Lewandowski and scoring himself off Pedri’s cross.
Barcelona breezed through the first half, extending their lead to 3-0 by the break. This came courtesy of Sergio Busquets, who won the ball in midfield in his last Barcelona derby and assisted Lewandowski’s goal through a coordinated effort with Frenkie De Jong and Raphinha.
Espanyol’s struggles continued into the second half, with Jules Kounde scoring off De Jong’s assist, highlighting Barcelona’s dominance as both their full-backs found the net.
As the game progressed, Espanyol’s focus shifted towards salvaging some pride. Finally, they found a glimmer of hope in the 73rd minute when substitute Javi Puado scored a beautiful goal. Joselu also reduced the deficit to 4-2, but it was too late.
Despite Espanyol’s late rally, Barcelona comfortably saw out the game’s final stages. This win confirmed Xavi’s maiden LaLiga Santander title as a manager and marked Barcelona’s first league title since 2019.
On the other hand, Espanyol faces a daunting task as they are currently in the second-last position, trailing Getafe by three points and Valladolid and Cadiz by four. Their fight for survival will continue as they travel to face Rayo Vallecano and host Atletico Madrid at RCDE Stadium, followed by crucial matches against Valencia and Almeria.
After the final whistle, the celebrations were marred by a group of Espanyol supporters who stormed the pitch attempting to attack the Barcelona players. This resulted in the Barcelona team rushing off the field as these miscreants threw objects at police and destroyed TV equipment.
