Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continues to navigate legal challenges that could affect his release from prison despite receiving some judicial relief. As various cases against him conclude, PTI leaders and supporters grow optimistic about the possibility of his release within weeks. However, government sources indicate a different scenario.

Pakistan senior journalist Ansar Abbasi reports that Imran Khan’s controversial tweet about the 1971 incident has led the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to consider initiating another case against him. Additionally, authorities are poised to file a second Toshakhana reference against Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, at a strategically advantageous time.

Despite acquittals in several cases, including three out of four significant charges, only one case significantly impedes Khan’s release. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has completed its investigation into the second Toshakhana case and is ready to file charges in the accountability court, aiming to maintain the couple’s detention.

Previously, Khan faced repercussions from the Toshakhana scandal when the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), under Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, disqualified him from the National Assembly for five years for concealing facts about sold gifts. This led to criminal proceedings against him for perjury.

Following the ECP’s ruling, a criminal case was forwarded to an Islamabad Sessions Court, which sentenced Khan to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case. However, the Islamabad High Court later suspended this sentence. In a separate cipher case, although both Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi were initially sentenced to ten years, the Islamabad High Court acquitted them.

Currently, the most substantial legal hurdle for Khan and Bushra Bibi is the sentence from the adultery case. Both were sentenced to seven years just before the February 8 elections. While there was hope for an acquittal last week, the judge, facing a loss of confidence from Khawar Maneka, deferred the decision and forwarded the case to the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court for reassignment.
