Apple has announced that it will discontinue the iPhone SE series and introduce the iPhone 16e as its replacement.
The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, steps beyond the sub-$500 market segment previously occupied by the iPhone SE and represents a shift in Apple’s approach to its more budget-friendly offerings.
The iPhone 16e will be available for pre-order starting February 21, with shipping scheduled for February 28. This new model boasts several significant upgrades over its predecessor, the iPhone SE. It features a larger 6.1-inch OLED display and incorporates Face ID, moving away from the traditional Touch ID home button and thick bezels that characterized the previous models.
Additionally, the iPhone 16e transitions from the proprietary Lightning charging port to a USB-C port, aligning with upcoming EU regulations and industry standards.
The iPhone 16e Specifications and Features
While the iPhone 16e maintains a 60 Hz screen refresh rate—lower than the 90 or 120 Hz commonly found in similarly priced smartphones—it introduces Apple’s A18 chipset. This chipset delivers performance on par with the iPhone 16, albeit with a slight reduction in graphics capabilities due to removing one GPU core.
The iPhone 16e is equipped with a new 48-megapixel primary sensor in the camera department, offering capabilities such as a 2X optical-like zoom and a 12-megapixel front camera for improved selfies and video calls. The device also inherits the Action Button from higher-end iPhone models, which replaces the traditional mute switch. However, it does not feature the Camera Control button in the iPhone 16 series.
Despite lacking premium features such as ProMotion and the Camera Control button, the iPhone 16e represents a significant update, making it a compelling choice for consumers seeking modern features at a more accessible price point.
